Macrodantin Drug Information
Macrodantin (generic name: nitrofurantoin; brand names include: Niftran / Macrodantin / Furadantin) is used for treating and preventing urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria.
Macrodantin is indicated for:
the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (acute cystitis);
for short- and long-term prophylaxis of urinary tract infections.
It works by interfering with various chemical processes in the bacteria, which results in the death of the bacteria.
Macrodantin Directions and Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Macrodantin exactly as directed.
Take medicine by mouth with food, preferably breakfast and dinner, or milk to enhance tolerance and improve absorption of Macrodantin.
Do not take an antacid that has magnesium trisilicate in it while you take Macrodantin. Check with your pharmacist if you are unsure which antacids have magnesium trisilicate in them.
To clear up your infection completely, take Macrodantin for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
If you miss a dose of Macrodantin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Macrodantin Precautions
Macrodantin does not interfere with the ability to drive or use machines. It is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. The tendency of Macrodantin to impart a brown colour to the urine is of no clinical significance.
Contact your doctor, if:
You have an allergy to Macrodantin
You have problems passing urine or have significant impairment of kidney function
You are a pregnant woman undergoing labour and delivery, or if the onset of labour is imminent
